Developments


That thing at the top of the page..

There are many different things that I do, each day, and now I've a vague way of gathering them all together in a somewhat neat fashion.
The new "tab-bar" contains links to the 5 main areas of AGameAWeek. The blog, Game Archive, Music Archive, Pixelart Archive and also the Calendar generator. I've even added a link to Socoder.
It took me an awfully long amount of time, yesterday, trying to find the perfect style for the thing.
I tried circular buttons, square buttons, realistic looking folder tabs, and lots of other styles.
In the end, the only thing that seemed to work with all the sites was, of course, my good old fashioned half-assed pixelart style!

Lesson of the day : When all else fails, head back to substandard mediocrity, and it'll all be fine!

As for coding, I got nothing done at all, as the stupid little artsy attempts ended up taking over most of the day.

RetroRaider issues

Today's mail comes from Baconman

Oh noes! Not the new RetroRaider!! I've been so looking forward to one since RR2!

There are two main issues.
The first is a case of drawing backgrounds. In order to get a nice chunky pixellated background, I need giant chunky pixels, and they're not easy to create when you're doing things at 1920x1080 resolution and above, inside a browser!!!
Drawing a basic RetroRaider background means drawing either a couple of really big images full of chunky pixels, or drawing thousands of rectangles.
It may be easier to come up with a completely different art-style for the game.

Hmmm..

Secondly, the levels. We've all played RetroRaider, and you know exactly what to expect.
Usually when I make a random level generator, I tend to build a random generator, then fit the game around it.
In this case, I'd have to make a generator that makes just the right sort of RetroRaider level, and that'll be a trickier thing to do.

Both of these elements, together, means the project probably isn't going to be done within a single week.
I'll keep the idea on the backburner, though, and will probably end up doing it at some point.
Just.. Not yet!
