I woke up at 4am and couldn't get back to sleep again..
Hmm.. What to do..?
-=-=-
I spent about 2 hours redrawing the Platdude/Shoebox card designs, into SmileBASIC.
The SB crew recently uploaded a "High resolution cards" pack for us to use, and although it seemed like a nice collection of cards, the overall filesize is somewhat insane.
The pack eats up about 300kb, and that's for each game that uses them. If I were to write, say, 20 games with the cards then it'd be 6Mb just for those games.
Yikes!!
So, I drew all the little assets that are needed for a deck of cards. Numbers/JQKA, the four suit icons, and then all the little Platdude Face-Card images.
Today I need to see if I can use those well enough to generate high-resolution card sprites, automagically, as the game is loading.
If I can, I'll have a nice deck of cards using only 42kb, which is a heck of a lot smaller.
850Kb if I made 20 card games, a massive reduction.
Now all I need to do is decide what games I can make with them...
Probably just Solitaire again.
