Old Laptop Gets Updates
Blog
12th July 2022
My Aunt needs a new laptop, but doesn't necessarily need anything too powerful.
-=-=- We scoured the net for a cheap thing, and did consider getting her a Chromebook, but have decided against that since we aren't sure how easy it is to clamp it down, as far as purchases go. Having already considered and discounted an Android Tablet because we couldn't figure out a definite way to lock it out from purchases, we figured the Chromebook might have similar issues. .. And definitely not an Amazon Fire product.. Those are purchase insanity!! Instead, then, I dug out my very first Laptop. I bought it in June of 2014, and it's still mostly stable. (Heavy as hell, mind, but I'm used to a super-light MacBook Air, nowadays!) The Laptop's running Windows 10, and is perfectly suitable for the types of things my Aunt needs. .. But the battery's completely dead on it, so I've had to order a new one from Amazon. Keeping it plugged in, it managed to boot up well enough (though.. Maybe a little slow!) and I started the epic task of getting it updated. .. Oh boy!! About 5 hours later, I unplugged the thing, and will be continuing the event later today. The new battery should be here tomorrow and, assuming it is what it says it is, (You know how third-party batteries can be) should be a quick fix for the main issue. I'll then spend some time setting things up in a neat way for her, so she can get online with it, do Facebook, play Shoebox (of course) and maybe shove some other fun things on there for her. Where's the Setting for...I forgot how much of a mess the overall settings experience in Windows is. Took me AGES to remember how to put the "My Documents" icon back on the desktop. You have to open the desktop settings, switch to theme, realise there's a tiny tiny tiny bit of text over on the right, click that to open an OLD (Win95?) settings dialogue, and from there you can ... put an icon on the desktop.. !!!! Good grief. Compare that to the current MacOS Beta where they took the time to rework ALL the settings into a nice new single-window control panel.. Everything's moved, the whole thing's been redone, but it's all in there.. Everything.. And this is a Beta, not even a final released operating system that's already been out for 8 years. *sigh* Views 25, Upvotes 3
