18 years ago, CodersWorkshop unceremoniously got stripped away without warning, and I scrambled to put together a "temporary" forum to keep things going in the meantime.
18 years on, and the site's still up and running, which I guess is a testament to just how sturdy I tried to make it in the first place.
It's got a complete and total rewrite back in 2017, where I finally took the time to neaten up all my gnatty code, and upgraded the SQL code to work a little better, but the database is 100% exactly how it was.
It even has leftover spaces for MSN/AIM/ICQ/YahooChat and GoogleChat! .. Not even Google+!!
So many old bits and pieces. Leftovers from almost 2 decades of old bits of data shoved into a database that's never been cleared out.
But, hey, at least it's still going!
And though 99% of the users are no longer active on the site, it's still a cosy home from home to all, and they're welcome to return at any point. Except one or two bad-actors over the years. .. There's always one.
Last year I had plans to integrate JSE into SoCoder a little more, so that users could register on SoCoder, then use that login on JSE, so it'd cloud-save all your code.
I never got around to that, as a giant upheaval happened at home. Maybe this year I should do that.
Sure would've been nice to have had that done for today, but .. Hey, ho...
Oh well. Keep going, SoCoder.
I can't imagine it'll still be in the same form in the future, though. I mean, it was already old looking when I launched it!
Maybe it's time for an upheaval of its own.
What form could that be, though?
How do you do a modern re-interpretation of a classic Forum?
[Dave is hunched over his computer, furiously typing on an old forum. The room is still littered with a few remaining yellow bunny ear hats. Green enters, carrying coffee.]
Green: Morning, Dave.
Dave: [excitedly] Greenie! I'm spreading the word about BurrowOffice on this old programming forum I used to frequent!
Green: [sighing] Dave, haven't we moved past this?
Dave: Never! Listen to this: "Fellow coders, prepare to have your minds blown by BurrowOffice - the VR spreadsheet experience that will revolutionise your number-crunching life!"
Green: Is that the same forum you once posted Philesplitter too? Good grief, how old is that?
Dave: It's just the right age to still be useful.
Green: Punched Cards are old and useful, Dave. I'm not sure that an empty forum with no visitors is exactly functional.
[Scene Two]
Int. Dave's apartment - Afternoon
[Dave is still at his computer, looking frustrated. Green is lounging on the couch.]
Dave: [groaning] Greenie, no one's responding to my posts about BurrowOffice!
Green: Shocking.
Dave: Maybe I should mention the Coke-powered calculator? That'll grab their attention!
Green: Dave. There's nobody on there. Nobody's attention is being grabbed, because nobody's there.
Dave: [ignoring Green] Oh! I know! I'll tell them about the complimentary bunny ear hats!
Green: Sure. That'll do it. Printable party hats.
Dave: It's so exciting!
[Scene Three]
Int. Dave's apartment - Evening
[Dave is slumped over his keyboard, looking dejected. Green is patting his back consolingly.]
Dave: It's hopeless, Greenie. No one appreciates my genius.
Green: Dave, it's ok to give up on the whole Rabbit thing. Maybe you could strip out the rabbits. You did write a fairly capable Office suite in, quite frankly, a ludicrously short amount of time.
Dave: [perking up] Hey, yeah! .. I could add cats instead. Everyone loves kittens!
Green: [alarmed] That's not exactly what I meant...
Dave: [excitedly] Particle physics for the kitten fur! Yeah!!!
Green: [facepalming] Dave, please, no.
Dave: Picture the youtube trailer: You, wearing kitten ears, doing spreadsheets whilst kittens run around the apartment!
Green: Why me again?
Dave: Where can I get kittens?!
