My elderly Aunt and her healthcare worker both came around for a visit. Though my Aunt's visited numerous times since the move, her healthcare worker hadn't been to the bungalow since shortly after we moved in, and she remarked on just how much progress we'd made about the house.
old vs new
I mean, it's not "huge", but there's a bit more colour to the living room, there's a lot more light, and it definitely feels more "ours" than it previously did.
We still need to replace that carpet, but we're going to leave that until next Summer when we can have a nice (hopefully) sunny day, take all the furniture outside, get the carpet done, then bring everything back in again.
The carpet runs front to back, covering the living room and dining room in one big roll, so it's going to be a hefty job getting it all done.
...
Anyway, we chatted for a while about how much we'd (Mostly Mum and Uncle) had achieved in "just a short year", and though Mum is indeed proud of all she's done, she's still somewhat frustrated that the old carpet's still there, and the dining room hasn't really been tackled at all.
It takes time, all of this.
We have to keep reminding each other that the ceiling in the old house hadn't been tackled.. .. EVER!!! When we moved in, it had a suspended ceiling, which Mum immediately wanted to rip out, but we instead replaced all the ceiling tiles, painted the suspension rails and left it there.. And every year, it was either repainted or new tiles were bought, and ... year after year, the "rip it out!" never happened.
And 37 years later we moved out, leaving the bloomin' thing in there!!!
Here, the living room ceiling has already been done, as part of the living room chaos of the past couple of months.
It's done.
Within a year, compared to not being done in 37 years.
And there's loads of examples of that around the bungalow.
Things we'd forgotten about, that my Aunt's Healthcare Worker kept pointing out.
We've achieved SO much in just a year that it's kinda interesting to see it all through a fresh pair of eyes.
.. And that's roughly how yesterday went.
Chitting and Chatting, then some TV Soaps, and all the rest of that "social" kind of stuff.
No time for coding, I'm afraid.
[verse]
Three hundred and sixty five days, and a bit.
That's just how much time we've been living here.
In all of that time we've been busying away,
And are shocked that it took us a year.
[alt-verse]
But we have to remember the things that we've done,
Within just a short measure of time.
And all of the effort and money we've spent,
Making all of the things look their prime.
[break]
[chorus]
Bungalow (bungalow) Bungalow (bungalow)
Where did all of the time go?
Bungalow (bungalow) Bungalow (bungalow)
The effort is easy to show.
[break]
[verse]
In the garden were trees and some bushes and ivy,
Which Mum took a blade or two to,
And a fence that she built with the help from our neighbour,
Took more than a week for to do.
[alt-verse]
She painted the walls, and the hall, and the doors,
And did wallpaper all through the kitchen.
Then when in the living room, work was too much,
Then the builders came round to all pitch in.
[break]

[chorus]
Bungalow (bungalow) Bungalow (bungalow)
Where did all of the time go?
Bungalow (bungalow) Bungalow (bungalow)
The effort is easy to show.
(I opted to remove the depressing bridge that I wrote, which was about feeling useless whilst Mum did all the work.. Kinda got a bit grumpy..)
[Scene One]
Int. RCHomes Former Vegetable Plot - Morning
[Dave and Green stand at the edge of an enormous crater]
Green: I told you you were a jinx.
Dave: Nothing a bit of Cola won't fix.
Green: I'm not sure coke will help here.
Dave: Look! The giraffe's checking structural integrity!
[The giraffe pokes its head up from within the chasm]
Green: I'm sure it's doing a grand job.
Dave: And the flamingo's helping...
[The flamingo stands, static, like a statue]
Green: It is, huh?
Dave: Sure is!
[Matt storms over]
Matt: What part of 'don't dig under RCHomes' didn't you understand?!
Dave: It's the mole's fault. It went rogue.
Green: It's a STATUE mole!
Matt: Why is that porcupine wearing a dinner jacket?
Dave: It's a safety vest. He's health and safety.
Matt: He's not doing a very good job.
[Scene Two]
Int. The Crater - Midday
[The heavenly cat lies in the chasm]
Matt: So let me get this straight... The bee was head of health and safety...
Dave: Yeah.
Matt: A statue bee?
Dave: Until yesterday. Now it's more of a consultant.
Matt: Because of the collapse?
Dave: No, because its string snapped. Very unfortunate workplace accident. I'm just glad the porcupine was here.
Matt: Are you quite alright, Dave?
Dave: Yeah, me and Greenie got out just in time, I think.
Matt: That isn't what I meant.
[Scene Three]
Int. The Crater - Afternoon
[The top-hatted chickens form a rescue chain]
Matt: This is worse than the furniture shop incident.
Dave: At least the T-Rex survived!
Green: With its tiny arms...
Dave: Tomorrow we're getting scaffolding!
Matt: NO!
Dave: "Fifteen, Climbing Scene!"
Green: Please, no more. I think your daily statue thing has gone a little bit too far.
Dave: But the flamingo's already drawn up the plans!
Matt: Why is the giraffe wearing a hard hat?
Dave: Safety first! The porcupine insisted.
Green: I thought the bee was health and safety?
Dave: It's complicated. There was a coup.
