I'm not doing anything particularly special for Advent this year. This is game number five.
-=-=-
Since the general "make a bunch of content in advance" went kind of a little bit askew, this year, I'm having to do things on the fly.
I can't guarantee a game every day, but this is the fifth game, so I reckon we're doing ok.
If home-life/christmas preparations/general exhaustion/etc starts to get in the way, I'm not going to worry about not posting a game.
On those days, maybe go have a walk and buy something nice for yourself.
Here's a game I made earlier.
Inner Brawl
ChatGPT took the name "Punch-Out!!" and reimagined it as a ZX Spectrum game, using only the name "Punch-Out!!", and no other clues as to what the game might be.
The concept it came up with was..
"Survive as long as possible by dodging incoming shapes. Move with joystick. Fire to destroy shapes near you."
So, that's roughly what I made.
Grab 3 stars to power up your destructo-boom, then fly near an enemy and let loose.
Controls
- Move
- Destroy (after collecting 3 stars)
What I Didn't Do
I didn't add any kind of indicator that you can hit Fire to set off the explosion. I probably should've done that.
[verse]
Your ship alone amongst the stars,
You've travelled out so very far.
The calming world and darkened sky,
An infinite and endless flight.
But look ahead, some evil shapes,
Are coming in to seal your fate.
Power up your ship with stars,
So you can blast so very far.
[break]
[bridge]
The stars are calling,
The blaster's near,
Let chaos boom.
There's no more fear!
[chorus]
Let it boom, Let it boom. (kaboom)
Watch explosions fill the room. (you're in deep space)
Set it off, Run away. (fly very fast)
Grab more stars to kill your prey. (escape that blast)
Turn the tide, make them fall, (kablam!)
Send them crashing, end it all. (A bright cascade)
Face the shapes, take your aim, (get closer)
One more burst will change the game, forever. (pa-pa-pow)
[break]
[Verse 2]
The swarm keeps growing, don't lose pace,
A battle fought through endless space.
The odds may turn, the fight seems grim,
But victory explodes from deep within.
With every burst, the colors glow,
Explosions dance, your power shows.
One blast at a time so make it last,
Your fate depends on how close you blast.
[break]
[Bridge]
A single spark can change the fight,
A chain reaction in the night.
With steady hands, the stars align,
The void will glow — this win is mine.
-=-=-
(pa-pa-pow)

[Dave's Kitchen. The plumber can be heard working away upstairs. Dave is rummaging through cupboards while Green supervises]
Green: Just make him a normal cup of tea, Dave.
Dave: Of course! Should I use the special mug with the Cola logo?
Green: No. A normal mug. For normal tea.
Dave: Right. Milk, sugar?
Green: Ask him!
Dave: [shouting upstairs] DO YOU WANT MILK AND SUGAR?
Plumber: [distantly] Just milk, thanks!
Dave: And would you prefer the teabag open or closed?
Plumber: What?
Dave: You know, some people like their teabags pre-burst.
Plumber: .. um. Closed?
[Dave heads back into thee kitchen, and begins his examination of the teabag]
Dave: Maybe I should measure the optimal steeping angle...
Green: It's tea, David, just put the bag in, pour in the water, leave it to stew.
Dave: I wonder if I have the right sized spoon. Gosh, Greenie, how do you cope with this every day?
Green: Teaspoon Dave. The clues in the name.
Dave: Like these ones? But I use all these for scooping sugar.
Green: Yes, but you can ALSO use them for stirring tea.
Dave: And which one do I use to pull the teabag out?
Green: It's the same spoon Dave. Just use one spoon, and magically everything happens.
Dave: OK, but he said he didn't want sugar. Just milk.
Green: Then don't put any sugar in?
Dave: So, just the tea? With a teaspoon?
[The plumber appears in the doorway]
Plumber: How's that tea coming along?
Dave: Just calculating the proper tea-to-water ratio using my Cola measurement system...
Green: [interrupting] It'll be ready in a minute. Normal tea. Normally made. With milk.
Dave: Where do we get the milk?
Green: From the fridge.
Dave: The coke fridge?
Green: .. You have milk, right?
Dave: We can improvise.
Green: [sighs] Have you still got that can of Tip-Top cream you've been saving for a special occasion?
Plumber: Cream?
Dave: Yeah, but PhileSplitter hasn't reached a million sales, yet.
Green: I'll buy you a new one. I'm sure we've got plenty of time.
[Greenie digs through the cupboards as Dave pours the exactly correct amount of water into the mug]
Dave: Should I document the process for future reference?
Green: Let's see if we can achieve a complete Tea before you do.
[Greenie finds an old worn-out tin of cream]
Green: Where's your tin opener.
Dave: I threw it out. Modern tins have the little ringpulls.
Green: This isn't a very modern tin.
Plumber: Is that ok to use?
[Greenie checks the date]
Green: We're not using this. Just give him the tea as it is.
Dave: Without milk?
Green: Just. Give. Him. The. Tea.
Dave: Fine. But I'm noting down that this is sub-optimal tea preparation protocol.
Plumber: [looking confused] I'll... just take it black, then?
