No matter what I tried, the latest Shoebox Word game just felt way too easy.
-=-=-
Yesterday, I decided it wasn't working in the way I was planning, so I've decided to shuffle the gameplay around a little.
Rather than simply tapping a letter, and it being fast-paced and a furious dig through the word-mine, it's now become a little more "Rack of tiles" like.
The word tower's still there, and you've still got the little cow and the letters to smash, but now there's a lot more wordplay in the game, and things feel a heck of a lot better as a result.
Honestly, this game's gone through a number of evolutions since I started working on it, but it now feels much more like a proper Word game than what it was earlier.
Less frantic, more thinky!
I'm still going to add time-based scoring into the game, mostly because the "normal" scrabble scoring isn't really applicable here. After all, the words are pre-chosen, so you don't really ever get "better" words, so can't ever really score more or less than the predetermined words would ever score.
As a result, timer-based stars will likely work better.
I need to account for "time to think" as well as "time to shuffle", but it shouldn't be too hard to play around with the timer to get that working well enough.
I'll try to be as lenient as I can with it, to ensure the timer isn't too evil, and you can still chill whilst playing it.
My main worry now is that, since the words are all complete words, and there's a finite list of 1,118 words to play with, the player's eventually going to end up playing the same words over and over, and it'll get easier and easier as a result.
Perhaps I should even stop trying to form words to start with..?
Maybe random letters are indeed better?
The basic gist is something like...
Word given = "NEURAL"
Shuffle the letters to form the word "LEARN", and give the cow the leftover U to smash.
Hmmm.
Again, more experimenting is necessary to finalise exactly what this game is supposed to be!

Eeek!

[Verse]
An airline to an album, an alias in flight,
Allergy allied, we allow the fight.
Amended amino, anchor the scene,
Apache wears apparel, animated and keen!
[Chorus]
Apply at the arcade, arrange your arrest,
Arrive with an article, artist impressed.
Asked while asking, assembly in tune,
Assigned to assure athletic festoon!
[Verse]
Battle the badge, badly baked in the bank,
Bald brave booster, bomb the blank.
Boulder's bound, boutique in a box,
Based brother brought a bass for the rocks!
[Chorus]
Apply at the arcade, arrange your arrest,
Arrive with an article, artist impressed.
Asked while asking, assembly in tune,
Assigned to assure athletic festoon!
[Verse]
Cache the cake, calm campaign cheers,
Capture carbon, carpet of tears.
Catering cause with a central chain,
Chorus of chaos, chapel's chilled rain.
[Outro (spoken laugh)]
β¦and if this makes no sense? Blame the game, my friend!
[Chorus]
Apply at the arcade, arrange your arrest,
Arrive with an article, artist impressed.
Asked while asking, assembly in tune,
Assigned to assure athletic festoon!
[Dave is peering through his window, watching Mrs Thompson walk past with another box of cupcakes]
Dave: There she goes again. Fourth Sunday in a row.
Dave: There's definitely something going on.
Dave: Mr Roberts went past earlier with another Victoria sponge, and the Hendersons had cookies...
Lady Computer: [displays calendar with every Sunday having a red flag]
[Dave paces, occasionally glancing out the window]
Dave: Everyone's carrying cakes on Sundays except me. Is there a secret cake society I don't know about?
Dave: Maybe if I follow Mrs Thompson... No, last time I followed someone it ended badly.
Lady Computer: [displays picture of camera]
[Dave starts pulling out a blue cloth from his shelving unit of cloths]
Dave: The blue cloth is for windows... If I go outside and pretend to be cleaning the windows, maybe someone will ask what I'm up to.
Dave: Or I could actually clean the windows, and then I might get a clearer picture of things. Clear windows, clear view, clear answers!
Lady Computer: [displays a Windows logo]
[Dave heads outdoors with his blue cloth, and pretends to be wiping the window]
Dave: Wipe wipe wipe. That's what I'm doing. Wiping with a cloth. It's a blue cloth. Wipe, Wipe.
Lady Computer: [displays image of water, foam, soap suds, which Dave can't make out from outside.]
Dave: I don't need a shave. I had one, this morning.
[Steve walks past with a cake]
Dave: That's the fifth cake in an hour! What if... what if they're all meeting up without me?
Steve: Mornin' Dave!
Dave: Maybe they're all going to Cakes, Cakes, Cookies and Cakes. But why wouldn't they just buy them there?
Steve: [shouting] Mornin' Dave!
Dave: Perhaps I should put up some camera, so I can see what they're up to.
[Steve gives up and continues his walk]
Dave: But then I'd need to clean the camera lenses, too. I wonder what colour rags those need.
Dave: Do I need to add a purple shelf section for social emergencies...
