23rd April 2013
In a change to our regularly scheduled April-Project, I've decided to stop pulling my hair out, and instead do something different.
Grrr.. What we're left with, however, is a nice happy little game for up to four players, so that's nice. -=-=- The object of the game is relatively simple. You place atoms on the board, and attempt to destroy all the enemy atoms. You do this by Overloading a square with too many atoms. The corner places can only hold one atom at a time, the sides two, and the middle places three. If you place too many atoms into a square, the atoms will explode, throwing out single atoms onto all surrounding squares, and leaving the current square empty again. If your spurted atoms land on the square of an opposing player, you claim that square for yourself, and if you overfill that square, you get a nice chain reaction of atoms blowing up! The mechanics of this game are relatively simple enough to follow, and are blatantly nabbed from an old game similarly titled "Atoms" that I used to play on the Amiga, back in the days. It's not very often that I do a straight forward remake, but I've always loved this game, and it's tricky to find a decent clone without having to trawl through hundreds of science-based Atom-drawing utilities, so I did what I normally do, and figured it'd be quicker to write my own. Here's that! (For the record, I've also previously made this on J2ME devices, and also here in a long-since abandoned collection.) The game is playable between two and four players, all switchable on the main menu. Click the atoms on the right to enable/disable each player. You can also switch them between regular human players, or alternative CPU players. The CPU isn't fantastic, and is somewhat random, but it keeps things active when there's no-one around. The three "Difficulty" buttons will select between small, medium and large playfields. (hint : I couldn't be bothered faffing about, redrawing the buttons!!) You can Download JNKAtoms here, where it's available for Windows, Android devices, or playable in your browser. -=-=- AGAWScoring : Image Fail The plan was, of course, to keep rebuilding Stringy Things over and over, with brand new word games, each week over April. The Image Loading Failure has caused that plan to fall to pieces, and everything's had to be redone from scratch. I'm very annoyed about the entire thing. *sigh* As a result, last week was my first "week without a game" of the year, and my numbers are now lower than they oughta be. I'm quite disheartened by the events of this past month. But as always, I've picked myself up, dusted myself off, and am ready to launch myself straight back onto the floor at a moment's notice! We're back to random spur-of-the-moment game making. I guess that works better for AGameAWeek! 17 weeks, 15 games Views 98, Upvotes 17
