AGameAWeek Gold - GREEN!!
Blog
6th May 2013
AGameAWeek Gold peeps through the Jayenkai Archive to see what games I've previously released on this day in history.
Occasionally we'll pluck out some real gems. Today's a cracker! .. or rather, today's TWO crackers!!-=-=- 2003 - Green's Tiny 8-bit CollectionThis game is TEN YEARS OLD!!! TEN!! Good Grief!!! I'll be honest, I'm not entirely sure exactly when this game was originally released. The May 6th 2003 date is the last known release of the game. It'd previously been released as part of BlitzCoder's Retro Competition, which, IIRC was some time in 2002. Although I can't be entirely sure. First place Commodore 64 computer, tape drive, C-64 programming manual (only have US power supply...so you'll need a converter If you're in the UK!) "Learn to Program 2D Games in Blitz Basic" book BlitzCoder T-Shirt Messageboard stars GETS A fantastic little collection of games, written in an extremely short amount of time, during some time in (probably) 2002. I re-released a slightly bigger version of it in 2003 with a few extra games, which is the collection featured here, but never took it any further than this. The complete collection is as follows, with comments written at the time!! Menu 1 1 JNKTiny Football - Weeee With AI Footballers! 2 JNKTiny Centipede - Yippie 3 JNKTiny Plat - Became remake of Fantasy Center from CPC Cascade 50 cassette 4 JNKTiny Maze - One level, but hey, it's a workin'! 5 JNKTiny Breakout - Working better than expected.... So much so, I've started on the Fuller version 6 JNKTiny Tron - Works.. With CPU AI's of varying difficulty Menu 2 1 JNKTiny Bouncer - Bouncy Bouncy.. Collision detection's gone to pot, but the idea works!! 2 JNKTiny Frogger - Yeay! It's Frogger, but a bit harder! 3 JNKTiny Matrix Blaster - Mmmm... Nice!! 4 JNKTiny Monkey Ball - Yeay! 4 levels of impossible Marble Madness!! 5 JNKTiny Slalom 6 JNKTiny Tanks - Works.. But the CPU AI's can't figure out how to shoot "Over" the hills!! Menu 3 1 JNKTiny Oh Mummy - Took a while before I could be arsed adding AI.. (God, I'm lazy sometimes ) Was hidden in releases 1-3, without AI.. Eventually added To release 4. 2 JNKTiny Invaders - 2 ships, 2 missiles, 1 Upper Body... Shitloads of baddies 3 JNKTiny Bejeweled - Oddly enough, it was slightly more taxing making the game check Rows/Columns, then Anywhere-connected blocks... 4 JNKTiny Dropper - What you get when you cross Simon and Beat Mania.. 5 JNKTiny Mr Driller - Might be a bit too simillar to Bejeweled, but... Fuck it! 6 JNKTiny Squares - For those who fondly remember Mr Green's Computing lessons.. (We used to sit and play squares, ignoring him completely! Yup.. That's Greenie... That's my Logo, My Mascot, My Big Main Thing... My bloody old Computing teacher, who was obsessed with Binary and Punched Cards!! Go figure!) Menu 4 1 JNKTiny Sumo Wrestling! - Push buttons as they flash up onscreen. 2 JNKTiny Shoot It - Shoot your opponent. First to 10 wins. 3 JNKTiny Spell 'em - Hunt for words in a falling grid of letters, not at all a clone of Two Way TV's String-em-in. 4 JNKTiny Make It Blue You can Download Green's Tiny 8-bit Collection here for Windows. But wait, there's more!!! Greenie - The Helecopter HeroHero, from Activision, was my absolute favourite game on my Atari 2600. Hours of fun, even if it was only a short game. In 2007 I decided to do a straight forward remake. It's very rare that I do straight forward remakes, but this was one of those times where it felt just right. I'd played a handful of other "Hero Remake" games over the years, and was getting sick to death of terrible slow horrible nasty versions that seemed to care more about shiny graphics than the actual gameplay. Bah, Graphics don't matter when it comes to games!!! So, armed with an absolute hatred of shoddy remakes, I started this, and it holds up quite well. There's the odd "Dodgy Collision" issue, and occasionally the game runs a teensy bit too smoothly, but otherwise it's an as-close-as-I-could-get-at-the-time remake of the classic. It also features all new levels, and a level editor, too, so.. yeah, there's lots to play through! Cursors to move, Down to drop TNT, Z/Up to fly, X to fire!
