AGameAWeek Gold - JNKPlat DS 08 Blog
2nd September 2013
AGameAWeek Gold takes a peek back through the masses of the Jayenkai Archive, to see if I've released anything of importance on this day in history.

Today's game might not exactly have been released on this day in history, as it actually went through a series of three or four separate releases.. I'll have to trawl through the various forum posts to be sure.. But today's the day that I've marked, so I'm pretty sure it had some sort of importance, way back in 2008!

*checks*
According to my post at GBADev.Org, I originally released the game on September 1st 2008, so we're close enough!

2008 - JNKPlat DS 08

I've written plenty about JNKPlat over the years, and there's a long waffling history of it, here, so I won't bore you by waffling any extra about it.

As far as I'm concerned, this edition of JNKPlat is the BEST version that I've done.
Not only does it feature a multitude of wonderful little tiles, each with a specific purpose, but it also does it all in tiny little sprites, which all get crammed onto the screen at once!
Trying to do that, nowadays, is difficult, what with every PC and Mobile device having a different screen resolution, and all those different aspect ratios to consider. It's hard enough trying to cram a bog-standard Match-3 game onto the screen, without having to deal with giant maps full of tiny tiles!
But on a Nintendo DS you have a very specific resolution, with a wonderful tilemap system that copes amazingly well when you're doing so many tiny little tiles.

Platdude is at home on the DS, and even controls brilliantly with those great little buttons that actually push in properly (he says, still annoyed at the lack of buttons on an iOS device!!)
And the touchscreen makes for a fantastic method to design your own levels, too.

All in all, this version of JNKPlat "Just Works"
Everything's in place, everything feels right, and it's the best example I've done.

.. 5 years ago!! hmm...

You can Download JNKPlat DS 08 here for Nintendo DS - Homebrew.
If you don't have a Homebrew-able Flash Cart, or have upgraded to a 3DS and don't want to bork the thing, you'll instead want an Emulator to play it on, in which case, I highly recommend DeSmuME, which is the one I tend to use when developing.
