AGameAWeek Gold : Star Trek Pong!
Blog
28th November 2013
AGameAWeek Gold is our occasional glance through the archive, to pluck out some of the great games that I've created over the many years that I've been doing this.
Along the way we'll discover some great gems that I'd forgotten about, or occasionally the odd bit of garbage that I'm frankly happy to have forgot about! Today, we take a look at a strange little Pong game! -=-=- 2002 - Star Trek Pong 311 years old, and still works a treat, such is the amazing everlasting power of Blitz2D!! Previous to this was Star Trek Pong 2, a version created using DarkBasic, which no longer seems to run on anything. In contrast, the Blitz2D game works nice and smoothly, and doesn't appear to break at any point. Nice!! Prior to that, was of course the Amiga original Star Trek Pong, and it's semi-sequel Star Trek Pong : The Next Generation. Both of those were written in Amos, with the original being a generic pong clone, and TNG adding the weapons into the mix. But here, we're dealing with Star Trek Pong 3. This is one of the first games I ever wrote using Blitz2D, and was more a learning experience than anything else. As it stands, though, it's got quite a nice frontend, and seems to be quite stable, keeping the framerate nice and even, whilst there's so much chaos going on... .. especially given how new I was to the language! The game can get kind of hectic when everything's going at full pelt, and I'm almost tempted to redo the game, updating it for modern systems. Still, it's a nice pleasant example of a decade old game. .. except, perhaps, not really suitable for modern displays. Gets a wee bit blurry!! You can Download Star Trek Pong 3 here for Windows.
