One Step at a Time
Blog
19th August 2018
I didn't get nearly as much done, yesterday, as I'd planned.
Or at least, not all the elements of yesterday's checklist, anyway.

Level Possibilities
Blog
18th August 2018
I've currently got the engine running with a level grid of 40x25, but the game can cope with any number of ratios, as long as the level data still fits within the confines of 1024 bytes.

Puzzling Without Gfx
Blog
22nd June 2018
I left the level generator to build me a decent number of levels, for a while, and have now got the game engine to load the level in, and display it onscreen in a half-decent way.
The next step is to draw some proper gfx, and come up with a nice new character for the game. .. Or should I use Roland again?! Hmm..

Making a Start
Blog
12th June 2018
I didn't get an awful lot of gameplay implemented into this week's game, yesterday, but the basic bits and pieces are in the engine.
I've decided another remake's in order, and am focusing on NeoPlat. Not NeonPlat, the happy neon Desktop game, but NeoPlatDS, the little Original DS game about landing on floors, or something!!

Saturday.
My "week-off" is nearly over.
As I look back at what I've achieved this week, I'm somewhat astounded by how little I've managed to get functioning correctly.

I spent quite a while, today, trying to come up with a nice fast tilemap technique for 3DS.
On the Desktop edition, I can draw to a buffer, then draw the buffer to the screen, but due to memory limitations, that's not quite as easy to do on the 3DS.
I've tackled a few different ways, already, but none of them seem to be helping in the speed department.
Essentially, I'm getting about 30fps out of a screen full of 8x8 tiles, which is absolutely horrendous when you consider that I used to be...

Nice Pool Game
Blog
23rd May 2018
There's a nice new pool game available on iOS by @helvetica called Pocket Run Pool. (.com)
People keep asking me on Twitter what it's like, because apparently I'm some sort of super-picky gamer when it comes to Pool games.
My thoughts are that it's a really nice and fully formed "Ball" engine, that feel superb, and doesn't have of the annoying things that I usually tend to pick at when playing a Pool game.
It's almost as if @helvetica's been reading my many rants about rub...

Unfortunately, it's without working music

Here's how yesterday went.
1. Create the logo, do the screenshots, prepare the assets.
2. Compile the Windows version.
3. Test the 3DS edition.
4. Tweak the 3DS edition.
5. More 3DS tweaking.
...
2184. Extra 3DS tweaking.
2185. Realise there's no time to post the actual game.

I said I was going to work on a Mini Clampett sequel this morning, so I cloned the project folder and opened it up, and then went "Hey, I bet I know what's wrong with the 3DS Engine.."

Bah, humbug!
After spending hours writing a lovely function, the other week, which takes .png images and chops them down to 1/16th their size, so that they work better in the 3DS's memory, it seems that the memory required to load those initial images before chopping is actually too much for the poor little 3DS to cope with.
After having tried the same engine with the same images, but pre-scaled down, the whole framework is running a LOT better.
This means that..
A ) I'm going to have to do al...

Tracking the Track
Blog
31st March 2018
This week's game might end up carrying over to next week, as I still have an awful amount to do, and not a whole lot of time left for this week.
(Plus, it's Easter Weekend, and we've got family showing up, so there'll be less coding time for Jay!)

Back to the Car
Blog
29th March 2018
Having attempted a whole host of other ideas, this week, I'm currently back to driving a car around a small track.
Top-down, 2D, probably timer-based.
Today will be about getting the physics to work, and figure out exactly what style the game will take.

So, I scrapped the Sheep Herder engine, and started a new "time trial based" engine instead.
I got a classic Thrust style gravity ship, popped it at the start of the track on the top left of the screen.
Fire for Thrust and then left and right.
