Awww.. Nuts. Today was supposed to be the great big release day, but annoyingly, one or two annoying issues have annoyingly cropped up. <img src="https://AGameAWeek.com/complete/NeonPlat_Extreme_20131126B.png"> First and foremost.. and quite bizarrely.. My Monkey games no longer appear to be working with Gamepads!! At first I thought I'd retweaked NeonPlat until my code no longer worked, but upon searching through my archive, it appears that they're all equally as broken. Either it's my Laptop...

Karl's Tiny Adventure was created way, way, way back in March of this year. You can (URL "https://AGameAWeek.com/GameList.php?ShowJust=288">Play Karl's Tiny Adventure here). The game was my first true test of proper "Image Data Loading", and my first proper lesson in Android Fragmentation. Annoyingly, because different Android devices operate in slightly different ways, the Image Data Loading wasn't occurring in an accurate manner, and as a result, the level data was getting all screwed up. As well...

The answer is simply because, a full year earlier, iOS got it's own special little NeonPlat. In February 2012 (Just before my whole hospital saga!) I released NeonPlat on iOS. It featured tilt-controls, and 3 difficulty levels, and stands out as it's own special little version of the...

Welcome to Neovember, the month of NeonPlat, where I take the original NeonPlat Raw engine, and gradually upgrade it, adding new gameplay elements, features and modes. By the end of Neovember, we'll have a lovely big Extreme version of NeonPlat, and we can all sit around and play it for days/weeks/months at a time! In this first week, I've decided to tackle the task of bringing over the NeonPlat Adventures enemies, and popping them into the new gane. So far I've managed the first 35 enemies, ranging ...

During most of October I've been building up a lovely little "Compendium". The idea was to make a collection of 25 little games, and pop it up as a sort of Advent Calendar type thing, but without it being thematically Christmassy, so that you could happily enjoy it at any time of the year. It's been about 2 or 3 weeks since I started the project. I got a lovely menu system working, and managed to fit all the usual scoreboard/icon/etc elements in. Then I started making games. .. and that's when the ...

As the AGameAWeek guy, I'm certainly used to shrugging off failed releases, and in many ways this one should be exactly the same. This is simply one of many releases that I've made this year, and over the course of the year, pretty much all the games have had a day or two of interest, and then quickly...

Late last night, NeonPlat Raw appeared on the OUYA Dashboard for the very first time. This is kind of a big deal, in that it's the first time one of my games has officially been released on an actual physical home-console. True, it's not a "PROPER" console, but .. Hey, it's a box with a controller that plugs into my telly. And it's got my games on it! So, Hell yeah, It's proper enough to me!! If you have an OUYA, you can grab (URL "https://www.ouya.tv/game/NeonPlat-Raw">NeonPlat Raw) for it. It's...

Testing time, again. Today, I purchased 2 very different, yet entirely similar devices. First, a wire. Very cheap! It allows me to plug an X360 controller into my Nexus7 device, and use it as an ingame controller, but only on games which support it. ( width="480" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/RoRpCm0UJhM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>> Second, an OUYA. Nicely cheap! I've no idea how far I'll manage to get with this game, and currently only have the main sprite, and logo drawn. That's pretty much the entire extent of this game, so far! But I'll carry on, and see how far I can get with it. Since I have such wonderfully high-resolution assets, though, I decided to make a lovely little wallpaper with them. People keep asking about how I manage to code AGameAWeek, and one thing they all eventually pick up on is that I'm currently doing it all with Monkey. (URL "https://monkeycoder.co.nz">Monkey) is a fantastic language which allows for all manner of different targets, and does a great job doing what it does. It isn't perfect, and it's not for everyone, but it suits me down to the ground. As with any development tool, it all comes down to preference, and whether or not you agree with the methodology o...

I'm taking a slight break from my usual AGameAWeek schedule. Over the course of September, I'll be spending extra time building up a super awesome edition of BlastTrax, whilst also taking the time to enjoy GTAV properly! Hurray for games! Meanwhile, I'm digging through my archive of old forgotten gems, and plucking out anything that isn't yet part of my Archive for reasons of terribleness, or general forgetfulness!

This week, (URL "https://twitter.com/caffeinekid">@CaffeineKid) released his latest Android-based remake, a classic from the world of the 80s!! A lovely retro game from the age of static screens, and proper dungeon crawling, where the game had to have actual gameplay, because in those days, you couldn't rely on 50 bazillion polygons to wow the audience. You had to have a bloody good game!!! ( width="480" height="360" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/HXjFlWNxxGs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

Rather than have a bunch of different posts all over the place, as usually seems to be the case here, I thought I'd create a game-specific page and dump all the reviews onto it. <img src="https://socoder.net/uploads/1/BlastTrax_Logo.png"> BlastTrax seems to be gaining a teensy bit of attention, although exactly how much of that is due to one particular reviewer bombarding me with his over-excitement, thus making it feel like there's a bunch of excitement when in fact it's only his own exc...

<img src="https://socoder.net/AGAWGold_128.png" style="float:left;">It's been a while since I did an AGameAWeek Gold. There's not been a lot of stand-out stuff popping up on the old time-machine. Sure there's been a whole pile of games, but nothing that's really been noteworthy, so for the most part I've kind of been ignoring this section of the site. Today, however, a lovely little game popped up, and I spent a good hour playing the thing! Whoops!!

For the past week, I asked people on Twitter and Socoder if they'd like to join in with a silly new game by drawing costumes onto a sprite of Idigidragon. The results came fairly slowly, but a number of decent attempts were made. .. Then Rockford over at Socoder sent a HUGE batch of stuff, and I had to spend a good hour or so cutting them up into little parts! D'oh! Anyway, this is the result.

Over the years, @Spinal_Cord has continued to perfect the stylings of the top-down maze genre. Taking his cues from an old C64 game he once played, Sensitive, he has created a whole host of variations on the theme over the course of his time doing game-dev. His latest effort in this genre sees him using the Monkey language, along with some lovely simple 2D commands, to generate a faux-3D look, which wouldn't look out of place in an old-school tech, or scene music demo.

For the past few years, I've been building and rebuilding a silly little experimental shooter thing called "Horizontal Shooter" The basic gist is that it's a bog standard horizontal shooter, but with a weird control scheme, and a tail to catch things in. I also tend to use Horizontal Shooter as a simple testbed, to see what a language can/can't achieve in the realms of simplistic blurry lovelyness. This time around, since we're also focusing on mobile devices, I've decided to flip things around, and ma...
