Thankyou Santa!! My issue with Super Mario 3D Land isn't the fact that it's in 3D. My issue is with the fact that the gameplay's in 3D. See, to me, SuperMarioLand was always a stripped down barebones edition of what made Super Mario Brothers great. As you played through SuperMarioLand, you noticed all the shortcuts they took, like how the levels seemed to be on a bit of a loop, repeating in a strange fashion. The whole game was fashioned to ...

It's been over a year since the Platdude Retro Advent Collection had a bizarre game with a ball and some spikes in it, and as much as I've attempted to get on with other games, that one little game keeps on getting dragged back out again! Last week, SpikeDislike won an IndieVisibility award, for being the best game to have with you on the toilet! This week, the guy who nominated it for that award has written a great big sprawling mass of text, all about SpikeDislike! (Link no longer available) ...

Korodny Just finished the game, so I'm here to say *Thank you* for some real good entertainment. A couple of things I noticed: Loved the game concept, and the visual design is spot on for that kind of game. Unfortunately, sound doesn't work on Ubuntu 11.10. It's a shame that the progress isn't properly recorded: The game should automatically offer me to play at the 'highest' levelset and the highest starting point I reached in my last session. Having to write ...

Today's long, long, long day of development was 100% iOS related. Having put it off entirely yesterday, I figured I'd better port that level builder doohickey. I opened TextEdit on the Mac, copied the level builder function from BlitzMax, and set about converting it, line by line, to something that XCode would compile for iOS. 800 lines of code, an estimate of "should only take a few hours, surely!" and then a completely exhausted Jay who just about managed to get the thing working 8 hours late...

First up, be aware that these aren't working yet, so the bit where one of the achievements would appear to be mostly impossible without the others, is actually down to the fact that they're 6 items apart, and nothing to do with anything that's been earned yet!!! .. having said that, here's the first screenshot of the Achievement table that I've been working on, today.

Alright, time to start on the next iOS project. Over the past year I've started around about 500,000 iOS games, and released 6. You're probably wondering WTF happened to the rest of 'em.

I woke up bright and early, planning to get a whole load done on my DaisyChains game, today. I started the day by installing iOS5 v3. This was a bad idea. It took me about 2 hours to get everything installed, reinstall XCode, get the new iOS5v3 iPod and Xcode working together, and then wait for all the apps to pop back onto the iPod. *grr*

Since I'm going to be doing Cassette 50 for a while, we're not going to be needing the regular Suggestion Box for a while. As a kind of replacement for those, then, I'll be thinking ahead, and wondering about the "larger" projects. Obviously one of the new ones is going to be a new Platdude game.

The year is new, but the logo's old. Sod it. I love this logo! I should be doing a year-long roundup thing, but I've not had much time, what with the whole Advent and stuff. No matter, there's been some good, and plenty of bad, and that's what AGameAWeek's all about!

It's not that I hated the old logo. In fact, in many ways, the old logo fit my whole game making thing a little better than this one does. So, maybe, at some point, I'll switch back. The thing is, though, if you slap the old Recterange logo onto a Tshirt, it looks like a freakin' name badge! Dumb, unoriginal, and a little childish. So, a newer logo for a new year, and I've gone with the whole "Just some text with a Platdude on it" style, which I think looks a teensy bit less childish, and name-badg...

Time to pick a new Jingle. I'm thinking that Year 3 should be marked, slightly, by tweaking the intro jingle a little, so I've gathered together a handful, and popped them all here.

54 games. Last year I only managed about 30-odd, so I think that's pretty good going. Sure, it might not have truely actually been A Game "Per" Week, but I did at least keep the ratio up. If I hadn't taken the time out to build the framework, I probably would've actually achieved the target a little better The stats show I was pretty much on top of things up until that point, but then things got slower and slower until my buffer zone was all dried up. Anyhoo, this is a nice big lengthy re...
