Feels like ages since I wrote about gamedev.. Let's do that, today!

Last week I lamented the fact that I hadn't done a Twin-Stick game in a while, in fact it was just as I was starting the Transpiler stuff that I first suggested a lack of Twin-Stick games. So it seemed somewhat inevitable that I'd make one sooner rather than later.

A couple of days ago I started "Generic retro shooter engine", with a traditional triangle ship, albeit one with a great big turret on the top.
Left stick to move (or WASD) and Right stick to shoot (or IJKL)
The engine worked nicely, so yesterday I added "Generic thing to shoot", and ..
...it was awfully bland.

How to jazz it up, then?
And that's when my mind leapt back to what I'm doing with VidGen.
How about a nice swoopy background effect?!



I tried out a few, and inevitably ended up with a zooming tunnel effect.

It's not quite as nice and smooth as VidGen looks, due to it being handled under layers of JSE and whatnot, but once it's in motion, it's not too shabby.
Hopefully other systems can at least manage to run it at a decent speed!




I'll be honest, it's a "little" bit chaotic.. But then, I guess that's kind of the style of the game, isn't it.
It's all a bit Minter'y!

Today I'll be tweaking the effects, playing with the balance, and trying to find just the right amount of gameplay to keep things interesting.



Game should be ready to go some time tomorrow.
..maybe...!
