GTT : Building Lists Blog
8th October 2024
I spent a good half of yesterday building up those all important word lists.

-=-=-

First off, however, was integrating that Right-Click menu into SoCoder, and that actually went pretty well.
The whole "Discordy" element is now working on .. half of SoCoder.
It doesn't yet work for Comments, but I can add that as time goes on.
Though the new functionality is 100% available to use, (if you can find it!) and the new minimised display is all working, and the menu .. 90% works.. Sometimes.. .. I've opted to not do what I usually do, and half-ass the job. Instead, I'll be doing things piece by piece, adding the comment section, then minimising more of the site down to a nice calming mode, and seeing if I can come up with a suitable new theme to round everything out.

Which is to say, if I AM going to make a secondary standalone AGameAWeek forum, this is likely going to be the default view for that.
It's all a much more modern-looking forum style, and I think it should end up a little bit less disorganised, as a result.

Meanwhile....

Back to the task in hand, and I've been building up those all important lists of words.
I now have 12 lists of words, ranging from home keys, left and right hand, words that leap over the keyboard in specific ways, and more.
Everything else from here on will need more finessing than just random words on a screen. The "Letters Page" game is ready, but there's many more games that need pre-written text data.
That's going to be one of my main challenges over the next month and a half.
Lots of writing, both code, and text!
Oh, and the actual tutorial text, too. Can't forget to write those!!!

I've pretty much finalised what each day's tutorial is going to be, so have a list of 26 tutorials that will be opened throughout Advent.
I've also started coming up with "Bonus Round" features, which challenge you to replay the tutorial with different sets of rules.
That is, if you can complete "Normal Mode", you can play "Undercover Mode" where you need to physically cover your hands with a t-shirt, towel, or whatever else is nearby, and you can then play that mode, and have a separate highscore table for that.

.. I mean, obviously you could cheat that, and say "Yeah, Sure I had a tshirt over my hands, I didn't look!!" .. But then you're only fooling yourself, and you won't be typing any better as a result. *slaps wrist*

There's a couple more similar challenges that will be integrated into the engine, so each of the tutorials will have (at the moment) 4 scoreboards. That should keep you playing, right?!
Gotta Learn Good!!!

So, 26 tutorials, each with 4 "modes" of play.
I need to figure out how to make a menu, next.
I'm currently thinking numbers.. That would work well, right?!
Type the number of the tutorial to open it up, A/B/C/D to select the mode and view that mode's scoreboard, and then maybe type Start to start?!
I know that sounds very type'y, but .. It's a typing tutor.. Let's not expect anything more than typing!!!
