Stackable Turret, Check!
The turret can be up to 3 stacks tall, as shown above, and there's 3 frames of animation between each stacked point, so we can deal with 3 hit points of damage before a piece of the turret is fully damaged. .. Though I'm not sure how the damage will unfold. Maybe it'll be based on how often it's fired or something?
I've imported a certain set of familiar neon baddies into the engine, though will be relying on wiggle-movement based animation due to lack of sprite slots.
Health points for baddies will likely be in the form of their size, so you have to shoot them repeatedly to kill them off.
.. And this is as far as I've got, yesterday!
It's not bad for a day's work, but. Gosh, I must be getting slow at all this coding malarky. There was a time when I could've coded this whole thing in a day!
Today's task, then, is to add the player character (guess who!) and from there will be working out the placement mechanics, then getting the baddy movement working, and then doing the shootyness of the turrets.
Lots to think about, and plenty to play with.

Green: I'm not eating that.
Dave: But look - it's got a strawberry on top! Makes it fancy!
Green: I'm not sure it's working.
Dave: Seven spices out of two possible meats!
Green: Only seven spices?
Dave: The other four are a trade secret.
Green: I''m not sure you'll make much of a profit on these... What did you call it? Smush cake?
Dave: ScrunchCake. And you wouldn't believe where the cornflakes are hidden!
Green: Is that what the scrunchy bits are?
Dave: Could be cornflakes. Could be... other things.
Green: You know you have to tell people what's in things, right?
Dave: Not always. Look at the eleven herbs and spices. We'll never really know what those are.
Green: Odd that you went for the KFC reference, and not the "What is Coke's Mystery Ingredient" one.
Dave: Remember when you raided my fridge the other week, looking for grapes?
Green: ...Yeah?
Dave: Well, that cheese had to go somewhere...
Green: Oh god.
