Spent a little time playing with colours and style, yesterday, but it never really got anywhere specific.
-=-=-
Four colour schemes. Not keen on that top-most one, if I'm honest, might redo it.
But it's nice to have something other than "Black and White" or "White and Black".
I'll probably try to use those design skills that I don't have, to try and come up with a few more.
Also, that main menu is still awfully unplanned! And the main game isn't really stylised yet.
Gosh, this may be the biggest stumbling block!
I tried playing the old Amstrad CPC "Pitman Typing Tutor" for a while, for inspiration, and the one thing I've decided is... pages and pages of text to teach you where to place your fingers is NOT something I want to be doing!
So, I guess I need to decide on a style for Greenie. Maybe pixelart Greenie might be best, that way I can probably animate a whole bunch of little frames and stick 'em all together into a fairly minimal number of spritesheets. That way I can have a bunch of animations, but not end up with several hundred megabytes to store it all!
That definitely feels like the best way.
I think I might try pushing a bunch of different Greenie's through various art style generator things, and see if I can find a nice minimalistic pixelart style for him.
I'll let you know once I have.
In the meantime, what are the thoughts on the 4 colour palettes, above?
Like I say, I like all but the top-most, but what do you think?
Let me know in the comments!
[verse]
An experimentation in colour.
A decision that I can't take lightly.
I have to find a subtle set of colours that work,
And don't blur out the screen too brightly.
[alt-verse]
Four colour schemes that I have made.
But the top-most one's not great.
At least it's nice to have something other than
Dark mode or Light mode to choose from.
[bridge]
I'll probably try to use those designer skills.
The ones that I do not have
[chorus]
But at least I know (at least I know)
What not to do (What not to do)
Avoid a screen (avoid a screen)
That's full and mean (full and mean)
I must add art (a bit of art)
And much more colour (much more colour)
To make the tutor (make the tutor)
A friendly place (so friendly) (yay)
[Dave is staring at paint swatches while Green lounges on the sofa]
Dave: I think I want to paint my bedroom green.
Green: Oh, very funny. Taking the mick, are we?
Dave: No, I'm serious! A nice mint green. Or maybe a subtle pale green.
Green: Like those mutant cabbages outside?
Dave: Yeah, like that! Well, you know, before they all got covered in cola, obviously.
Green: You know, last time we painted, you were dead set against green.
Dave: That was your room, this is different.
Green: So, it's ok for you to have Green but not me?
Dave: You didn't want Green either. You started moaning about not wanting everything Green, with your name being Green.
Green: Oh yeah, I did say that, didn't I. Maybe you should avoid.. ... Parker?
Dave: That's not a colour.
Green: No. But it is a type of jacket.
[Scene Two]
Int. DIY Store
[Dave and Green are looking at paint samples]
Green: Remember what Matt said about mixing? Three parts green to one part white.
Dave: No mixing this time. I want something ready-made.
Green: What about this one?
Dave: Too dark. I want something lighter, like the cabbage. Feel the cabbage. Be the cabbage!
Green: How about that one? Zen Green.
Dave: That sounds more like a nickname for you! Zen Greenie!!
Green: It's a nice colour, too.
Dave: Alrighty! Let's 'ave it.
[Scene Three]
Int. Dave's Bunker - Dave's Bedroom
[Dave's already painted the main wall, as Greenie enters]
Green: Alright I found my roller. ... Good grief, you don't hang around.
Dave: Yeah, come on Greenie, let's get the first coat done, as quick as we can, so we've got time for a rest before lunch.
Green: Um, sure, ok. Pass me the paint.
Dave: I thought you had it?
Green: How could I have it? You've ... .. You've been painting with it. I haven't even been here.
Dave: Oh yeah.
[Dave pauses for a moment, and looks around the room]
Dave: .. Is it the green one?
Green: Yes, Dave. It's the green one.
Dave: OK, then it's in the plant pot by the kitchen cabinets.
Green: [confused] Ok...
