I spent more than a little time trying to sit at a desk, yesterday.
-=-=-
It's been over a decade since my brain-kerfuffle, and in all the time since I've barely sat at a desk. Over the past few days, since getting the new MacMini (named ALBox) I've been setting things up in preparation for sitting..
Whether I will, I'm still not 100% sure.
It might end up being that I simply Remote-Desktop to the MacMini using my laptop all the time, and have it as an off-laptop AI system.
But it might also end up being that, I actually find myself sitting and using it?
Maybe..
Who knows..
A new Logitech Keyboard+Mouse has been purchased.
A Logitech K380s, Pebble Keys 2, and matching M350s Pebble Mouse 2. One interesting thing about these, is that you can pair them to three devices, and use a either the button under the mouse, or the keyboard's F1/2/3 keys to toggle between the three devices. Essentially doing away with the need for a KVM for a lot of cases.
.. Though, if I were to have the MacBook open on the desk, I could also use the Mac's Universal Control, too, so I guess that's not a great and amazing feature.
... But I could connect them to the ROGAlly, too.
I'd still need to use the TV's remote to switch between HDMI signals, though.
Speaking of which, the TV is still an old Toshiba 24" 720p display.
Will I be upgrading that?
... It's kinda doing my eyes in, if I'm honest. VERY pixelly display. I forgot how gritty a 720p display is, when it's this big, and this close up.
At the moment, I'm finding myself looking at 27 inch 4K displays, but those are all a little too large to fit onto the slightly cluttered chaos of the desk.
Having said that, there's now plenty of opportunity to reduce the clutter somewhat, especially if I'm going to be using both the ROGAlly and ALBox as Emulation stations.
I can actually move a whole lot of the stuff from "has to be close to the TV and connected" positions, to less enforced placements around the room.
It'd certainly help in a whole bunch of places.
Yeah, that might be a purchase for a few month's time.
[verse]
I work in code and hope to please.
My fingers flailing on my keys.
Typing endless streams of words,
To give my games what they deserve.
[break]
[chorus]
Making all the games I make,
I build them up and let them bake,
To be the games you wish they were,
Or maybe something more bizarre.
[break]
[verse]
Games to play and games to beat,
I code them all and make them neat.
On Monday mornings, if I cope,
You can play the games, I hope.
[break]
[chorus]
Making all the games I make,
I build them up and let them bake,
To be the games you wish they were,
Or maybe something more bizarre.
[break]
[bridge]
At the weekend I need a bit of a rest,
Tired out from all the typing at my best.
I chill out by playing some No Man's Sky
or perhaps more Zelda : Breath of the Wild.
I wonder if when the Switch two's out,
That I'll play too much and leave in doubt,
If I can manage to code more games,
Every week like I tend to always aim.
[break]
[chorus]
Making all the games I make,
I build them up and let them bake,
To be the games you wish they were,
Or maybe something more bizarre.
"Cartoon Derek rearranges his cluttered computer desk. Floppy disks, hard drives, pc towers, mini pc, apple icon, monitor, keyboards, mouses" by DrawThings / Flux
[Dave is standing in the center of the enormous empty space, surrounded by cardboard cutouts of what will one day be a gaming arcade, a fully functional kitchen, and a towering ScrunchCake display. Greenie sits on a nearby crate, watching Dave pace back and forth with a mix of excitement and anxiety.]
Dave: This is it, Greenie! The future of our business! One day, this will be the biggest, most exciting spot in town! The arcade where kids will spend hours playing games, the kitchen where we’ll serve up the best meals around, and the ScrunchCake display that will have people lining up for miles!
Green: Are you sure you want the Arcade to be that small?
Dave: It's big enough. We can easily fit about twelve or so retro machine in there. Arcade games that challenge your mind and reflexes.
Green: Sure, but you've given about three times as much space to the kitchen, and all that really needs is a work surface and an oven.
Dave: But the kitchen is where we serve up meals faster than you can say "spaghetti!"
Green: They're not meals, Dave. They're ScrunchCakes.
[Dave jots down "Spaghetti ScrunchCakes?" onto his notepad]
Dave: And the pride and joy. The ScrunchCake display! Creamy, delicious, crunchy, and ready to take over the town!
Green: And how long is this going to take? So far all you've done is progress from blue duct tape to cardboard cutouts.
Dave: I’m not lacking in progress! I’ve got the vision, Greenie! That’s half the battle.
Green: And the other half?
Dave: I've gotta decide how to bake all the ScrunchCakes to fill that entire wall with variety and excitement.
[Greenie raises an eyebrow, looking over at the half-complete shelving units.]
Green: We still have another seven of those display things to put up, yet.
Dave: We're getting there, Greenie. In just a few short days, we'll be ready to open. Mark it in your calendar.
[Greenie rolls his eyes, getting up from the crate he's been sat on.]
Green: And you're inviting people to see it?
Dave: Yep, they should be here shortly. Do you think we should put some music on? Shops have music, right?
Green: I've heard the licenses can be rather costly.
Dave: Hmm. Maybe I should make my own music that can play in a loop?
Green: When are you getting time to make music? We're busy enough here!
[Dave looks around nervously, as if he’s just remembered something important.]
Dave: Oh, and we still haven't decided where the Till's going to go.
Green: I thought we decided it'd be close to the door?
Dave: That's not as important now we've got the ScrunchCake Security Sentinel.
[Greenie groans, pinching the bridge of his nose.]
Green: You’re not actually going to make that, are you?
[Dave nods determinedly, even as Greenie shakes his head in disbelief.]
Dave: I’ve got to make this work! This shop is going to be huge, and everyone’s going to want a piece of it!
[The door swings open, and Mrs. Thompson steps in, followed by the Vicar. They’re both looking around with a mix of curiosity and disbelief.]
Mrs. Thompson: (smiling) Dave, Mr Green. What a large empty space you have! This place has so much potential!
Green: Hello everyone. Welcome to Dave's latest crazy project.
Vicar: Indeed. It's quite a blank canvas. Why is there an arcade?
Dave: It's a game store primarily, but with ScrunchCakes as an added bonus.
Vicar: Oh, I see.
Mrs Thompson: And so much space for your beautiful ScrunchCakes. Gosh.
Dave: Yeah, I'm currently trying to decide on the best selection to fill the fridges.
Vicar: Will they be cold?
Dave: The cakey ones, sure. Then there'll be those heaty display units for the warmer ones, too. What did you call those, Greenie?
Green: The heated display units?
Dave: Yeah, those.
Green: Um. I just called them heated display units.
Mrs Thompson: That's ingenious. So much variety. It's a shame half the space is taken up by those Arcade machines.
Vicar: I do like the prospect here.
Dave: See, Greenie. I told you. People love my ScrunchCakes.
Green: They didn't taste the purple ones.
Vicar: When do you plan on opening? I might just write about it in the church newsletter for you.
Dave: We're not sure, yet. We still haven't decided where the Till's going, yet.
[Mrs. Thompson looks around at the half finished shelves.]
Mrs. Thompson: (laughing) I’m starting to think this place isn’t quite ready for customers just yet.
Dave: Don't worry, with my vision and a bit of hard work, this could be open in no time!
Green: Maybe a bit of time. Let's not rush things, Dave.
[Fade to black.]
