🔀 - 06 - Switch, Obviously...
Blog
6th June 2025
The important games got installed, and tested.
This blog was written late last night, after a good amount of gaming was had. -=-=- Virtual CardsI set up the Switch as a "new" switch, so didn't do the full transfer, mostly because Mum's been enjoying having the old Switch to play on, so I didn't want to wreck that setup for her. So, to the Virtual Cards we go, and that's actually a really really nice way to do things. You sit the two consoles nearby each other, make sure the same account is logged in, then say "I want this card from my library!" at which point it disables it from the Switch 1, and downloads it on the Switch 2. You can then flip and "toggle" whether the virtual card is in one system or the other. Honestly, this is a REALLY nice way of doing this, except for one teensy tiny drawback. Since me and Mum are both playing under what is essentially the same account, we can't both be playing the same copy of the same game. So, as ideal as this setup is, we can't both play Puyo Puyo Tetris.. And, for the most part, I'm not allowed to play Puyo Puyo Tetris, because then Mum can't.. We also can't play 2 player in handheld, so it'll have to continue to be 2 player on the Switch 1, with two controllers. .. How incredibly old-skool!!! But other than that, yeah, works really well. SmileBASIC![]() This was quirkier than I was expecting, as I'd forgotten that I bought the thing using my alternative Japanese account, so first thing's first, I had to log in my Japanese account, too, and then I was able to do the "virtual card" thing, and drag it across from the old Switch to the New Switch 2. I did consider re-purchasing the game under my normal Jayenkai account, but the e-shop wouldn't let me. Whether that's because.. A. I already "own" the game, because it's on my Switch , even though it isn't "me" that bought it. or B. Because it's not 100% foolproof on the Switch 2, due to the Switch 2 not being compatible with ToyCons and the IR sensor and such .. I'm not entirely sure what the situation there is. (I learned the truth, this morning!) ![]() Anyway, I logged into the Japanese [JNK] account on both the old and new Switch's, and then it let me do the Virtual Card thing without any issues at all. Again, this is really quite powerful, and it's great that they went down this route. -=-=- Fun Fact that I learned, this morning via Twitter @Notohoho (CEO of SmileBoom, creators of SmileBASIC) was unaware that you could bring SmileBASIC from Switch 1 to Switch 2 using the VirtualCard system. He assumed that, since it wasn't yet flagged as "100% compatible", that it would remain stuck on Switch 1 until they'd fixed it up. Oops! This also explains why I couldn't "buy" a new copy on the Switch 2. -=-=- My regular English Jayenkai account can still access SmileBASIC, as can my Japanese JNK account. I'm thinking of maybe starting afresh with SmileBASIC, and creating a new fleet of games under the Jayenkai account.. .. I guess we'll see if I get around to that! ![]() I can confirm that SmileBASIC 4 does "more or less" work ok on the Switch 2. There's a slight glitch if you hop in and out of the home screen, where SmileBASIC reports it's overwhelmed the GPU!!! ![]() This only seems to happen when you toggle to the home screen and back, though, so I'm presuming it's something to do with a difference in the way that "pause/resume" is being handled on the Switch 2. Hopefully they can fix that. BOTW and TOTKYou all know the deal with these. They're quicker at loading, they look all the more detailed, and it looks epic on a 4K screen. Yep, all true. ![]() Unfortunately, I can't really play 3D games on the big telly anymore. My motion sickness seems to kick in after about 5 minutes of big screen gaming. Instead, I'm pretty much stuck in Handheld mode. It's brighter, crisper, larger display, though, so I'm not going to grumble! It's also a little higher res on there, and with everything running nice and smoothly it's certainly an improvement. I might have to do some aimless wandering for a while. No Man's SkyThis is infinitely better than how it used to look on Switch 1. I've played this game on so many systems, now, that I've pretty much lost track of all the different enhancements that I may or may not have seen along the way. It's smooth, it's nicely detailed, it's ... .. Well, it's No Man's Sky again, isn't it!? ![]() ![]() Photo mode's a bit glitched, though. If you use the A button to take a photo it looks a bit.. umm.. ![]() The Switch's capture button works much better. Mario Kart WorldI've completed the first cup in 50cc, and that's more than enough for me, thank you very much, my a-button thumb is killing me after that!!! Having said that, just driving around in Free Roam mode is lovely to do, and having a look around at all the sights is great. I'm not sure it'll hold my attention as much as BOTW/TOTK or No Man's Sky have, but from a quick drive+glance, it certainly looks like a nice place to explore. ![]() I might bother to play the actual game, but .. Me and racing games. .. *shrugs* Note, all screenshots are being transferred via the Switch app, and all appear to be coming out at 1080p no matter what the circumstances are when I take them. Whether that's the Switch App Transfer doing that, or if the Switch is actually only taking 1080p pics, I've no idea. ConclusionIt's a Switch 2. When we moved, and I lost my Switch 1 to my Mum, I fully intended to eventually replace it with a Switch 2. I've done that now, and I guess it was worth it... Maybe?! I played it off and on throughout the day, (between motion sickness bouts!) and so far my wrists feel ok. I mention this because, every time I play on the ROGally, I can feel that RSI cramping kick off. It's quite bad, and has almost stopped me playing the thing a fair number of times. But so far, the Switch 2 hasn't done that. So, I guess that's something..? I suppose I have to go and play some FZero and Soul Calibur 2, now, right?! I wonder how the Switch handles the Gamecube's analogue triggers..? A.I.
