Seems like the MacOS Beta has decided that yesterday was the day for churning like a crazed munky, and gobbling up all available resources.
Spotlight Indexing.
Oh joy.
I'm sitting here with a laptop on my knees which is getting hotter and hotter, but is barely able to do anything.
Man, I do love installing the betas, but they're thwart with these kinds of issues.
It's the "mds_stores" that's doing it. This is (apparently) the tool that scans all your files and creates a "metadata(S) store(S)" of everything in a quickly searchable way.
Apparently the latest betas have changed how the Neural Engine works, (which is why DrawThings currently isn't working) so I'm presuming this is something to do with that, too.
Also, I recently discovered that any time the desktop wallpaper is changed, a cached .bmp version is stored in a cache.
My system's flicking through an archive of Platdude Pixelart .png (averaging 32kb each) and every 15 minutes one of these is being saved (timestamped so there's no repetition and the collection just endlessly grows) as 6.2Mb .bmp images..
.....
So, that was a 16Gb folder full of garbage...
*sigh*
Apple, what are you doing!!?
I think I'll leave the MacBook plugged in, charging, with the usual "float it a bit so it doesn't get too hot" way of standing.
Hopefully it's more useable later.
|update| ... Later |update|
I wrote this blog at 1pm yesterday, and then wondered what I could do for the rest of the day.
... The answer was No Man's Sky.
[verse]
I watch as the Macbook's battery drains at a really alarming rate.
It's draining fairly badly, but it's not for lack of working.
The Spotlight Search is indexing the whole of the laptop's drive.
I hope the task will finish soon, so I can get back to coding.
[chorus]
42 Percent. It's dropping really fast.
41 Percent. Watch the numbers running past.
40 Percent. Nearly down into the thirties.
39 Percent. Apple sure has done the dirty.
[verse]
It's at thirty five, now. It scares me how fast it's dropping.
And all the time, it's warming up, I'm not sure how it's coping.
Forty Eight degrees, just so Siri can maybe learn.
I'd plug it in and let it charge, but I'm worried it might burn.
[chorus]
34 Percent, And it keeps on running down.
33 Percent, My productivity drowns.
32 Percent, I can't take it any more.
31 Percent, Plug it in, now, before.... [glitch]
[silence]
[bridge]
The temperature is building now that it has got more power,
But I really need to leave it charging here, for just an hour.
I'll keep on checking on it, to ensure it's not on fire.
Wipe it's brow, and give it lots of air, to help it not perspire.
[chorus]
25 Percent, It should be charging now.
26 Percent, It's coming back to life.
27 Percent, Oh happy joy.
28 Percent, My super laptop toy!
Int. Dave's Games and ScrunchCakes - Shop Floor
[The shop is bustling with weekend customers. Dave is demonstrating his plastic ScrunchCake toy to a confused elderly customer while a queue forms.]
Dave: And if you squeeze it just right...
ScrunchCake: [in Dave's voice] KewlyKewly ScrunchTime!
Elderly Customer: I just wanted a regular cake, dear. One of the sausage and raspberry ones, please.
Olivia: [approaching rapidly] Maybe you should concentrate on serving the customers instead of fiddling about with squeaky toys?
Dave: They speak, not squeak!
[Green emerges from the stockroom, carrying boxes]
Green: Dave, look at the queue. What are you doing?
Dave: [to customer] But look, it also says this...
ScrunchCake: Scrunchamazing!
Green: David...
Dave: Fine, but I'm telling you, merchandising is the future.
Olivia: We can work on that once we've got this queue down a little.
[Dave starts serving customers, but sneakily demonstrates the toy between transactions]
Customer in Queue: Is that thing edible?
Dave: Not yet! But Phase Two-
Olivia: There's a Phase Two?
Green: There is no Phase Two!
Olivia: I don't think we're out of alpha testing yet. Phase Two can wait.
Dave: [whispers to toy] That's not true, ScrunchBuddy, you're definitely out of alpha.
ScrunchCake: Have a caketastic day!
Olivia: [massaging her temples] I need a holiday.
