Yesterday I spent a good couple of hours recreating the classic Codemasters title "3D Starfighter" before realising "This game's shit!!" The game was abandoned where it was, but I've left the code in the Arcade Calendar, so I might sneak it in as a bonus game, or something.. *shrugs* It's not a "bad" game, it's just really really dull!!! Luckily, I also made a nice Army game, and that turned out nice and playable, so that's ok. (URL "https://AGameAWeek.com/wp-content/uploads...

( width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/z95Cn1S9d78" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>> Yesterday was spent tweaking various difficulty settings. There are 11 (0-10) available difficulties being coded into the level generator, and this video shows what happens at Level 3. Level 0 is easiest, with fewer easier to manage baddies, whilst level 10 is full of spikes and nasty Duck-Turrets. Today I'm going to be tweak...

Last night I re-rendered and uploaded the entire (URL "https://archive.org/details/PrecariousAlBum">Precarious Al Bum to Archive.org) Annoyingly, I forgot to trim the tails on the tracks, so they all end with about a half-a-second of silence. Ooops.. I'll have to poke around in Archive.org's settings and see if I can update the files, but I imagine they're probably going to have to stay like that. Aw well.. Meanwhile, I also created a new track for the Liquid A...

Aaah, iTunesConnect. When Invisible Munky 2 launched, the other day, I noticed something odd in my iTunesConnect pages. Where there's usually a "Request Promo Codes" link, there was none. Basically, I can't give away Promo Codes for my iOS games, because I can't bloomin' well get any codes in the first place. I was baffled, and tried many things to get them back, including emailing and chatting with Apple themselves about the situation. After a good number of hours, they don't ...

Yesterday, someone new registered on my home village's website (LittleLever.info) They, of course, instantly forgot their password, so used the "I forgot my password" button to find it out. At this point I should probably explain why I've mentioned this..! About a year ago, the original owner of LittleLever.info gave up paying for a site that never had any visitors. He stopped payments, and the site fell into disrepair before eventually getting pulled down completely. At this...

Not a lot of coding got done, yesterday. I continued to fiddle with the new sprites, and got enemies spawning in the level, but then I started thinking about iOS again. For the past year I've been focussing on OUYA. I've been making all my games controller happy, and as a result, have been neglecting touchscreen controls. I'm not sure why, probably all the AppleWatch stuff that's currently flooding my Twitter feed, but I'm finding myself somewhat nostalgic for the times that I s...

Welcome to the new daily blog section of AGameAWeek.com. I could do with reorganising the layout of the site, if I'm honest!

Yesterday

Yesterday I did a few odd little bits and pieces. I got "bombs" to work in the new engine, and managed to get a feel for the game. So far, so good. I think! Occasionally, I base games upon crazy bits of coding that seem fun to play with. Sometimes games can form from odd little artistic doodles that look strange and unusual. Other times, I'll start with a sound effect, or a piece of music, and allow it to fester away until a game has emerged. This week is different.. This week, the game's idea came solely from the stupid mock game title that randomly popped into my head. *shrugs* <img src="https://AGameAWeek.com/complete/Alien_Spindome_20140603A_...

People often complain that my games look "too retro", and yet, this mostly-monochrome game with a seriously shitty sprite, is getting lots of attention. .. You can't please everybody! Seems to be going fairly well, and is relatively popular, but the exact same issue seems to be cropping up over, and over, and over and over again.. The helicopter only ever faces Right, and the planes only ever face Left. "OMG!! It doesn't turn around!!" "Why can't I turn round!?!" "It should be able to turn!!!" P...

The internet is a place for trolls and complainers (like me!) who like to gripe at every opportunity. For the most part, we tend to ignore these types, which generally means that comments sections have become largely ignored. Here at AGameAWeek, the opposite has happened. There are apparently no trolls daring enough to even attempt to play my games! I seem to have scared most of them away. As a result, there are no trollers or complainers here, and since those are the types that make up the 99% of the ...

I'm taking a slight break from my usual AGameAWeek schedule. Over the course of September, I'll be spending extra time building up a super awesome edition of BlastTrax, whilst also taking the time to enjoy GTAV properly! Hurray for games! Meanwhile, I'm digging through my archive of old forgotten gems, and plucking out anything that isn't yet part of my Archive for reasons of terribleness, or general forgetfulness!

BlastTrax has passed iOS Review, so all is looking good for it's target August 27th release date. Since the game is now up on the AppStore, but currently locked tight until the release date, I thought I'd have a bit of fun with it, so I posted the following challenge onto Twitter. Apologies that this post has taken me so long to publish. I actually wrote most of it about 3 months ago, when I first released SpikeDislike2, but it's been sat on my Mac on a Sticky Note, and I kinda forgot all about it! I remembered it, the other day, when I submitted SpikeDislike2-Lite to Apple. What follows is a checklist/guide for compiling your (URL "https://monkeycoder.co.nz">Monkey-coded) game onto iOS.

A remake, this week, of a popular old game, but one which appears to have lost it's powerups along the way. The game plays well enough, but it feels somewhat lacking. Perhaps a little community-driven inspiration might help bulk it back up again?

<img src="https://socoder.net/AGAWGold_128.png" style="float:right;"> AGameAWeek Gold is a daily trip through the Jayenkai Archive, to see if I've previously released any games on this day in history. Sometimes the day is uneventful. Not even I have managed enough to pad out every single day of the year! Oddly, though, other days contain more than one game. And today's one of those days!

<img src="https://socoder.net/AGAWGold_128.png" style="float:right;"> Sometimes, stripping things back to their simplest mechanics makes for a strangely more interesting game. Other times, however, it just makes an otherwise vaguely interesting game a little more dull. This is a great example of the latter.
