JNKBombers?
Blog
9th May 2014
I've not attempted a Bomberman clone for many many years, so after a fairly short discussion on the OUYA forums, I sprang to life, and got started.
So far so good, but I'm thinking there's a lot of stuff to implement, so it'll probably take a little longer to finish this game than my regular AGameAWeek schedule.
Don't be surprised if this one drags on a little!

Yesterday I tweeted that Blockman Worlds isn't doing too well, at which point I got bombarded by people telling me that they've played it, and how I oughta give it time to spread.
Yeah, probably..
Thing is, though, I'm finding myself comparing it to Future Classics..

Are you sick to death of seeing nothing but clones of Flappy Birds and Threes*!?
Want a little more variety on your iPhing?!

I usually try my best to come up with unique or interesting takes on existing games. Taking things in new directions, like Blockman which definitely isn't Pacman, or TetriPong which clumped together two completely different games.
Occasionally, though, it's nice to sit back, relax, and make a crazy lazy clone of something, just like everyone else.

I don't normally do "Postmortem" type blog posts, but figured I might as well start.
Not sure whether this will become a regular thing, or not, but I thought it'd be nice to keep track of what happens after I post each game.
In future I might leave it until a good few days have passed, but the world of AGameAWeek tends to flow fairly rapidly. We'll have to judge it as it happens.
Anyway, welcome to the newest section of AGameAWeek, where I take a look at the stats and things, to help figure out if the...

Sheep Goes Right, or at least a minor version of it, is now (URL "https://www.ouya.tv/game/Sheep-Goes-Right/">available on OUYA.)
It isn't finished. There's a lot more of it that I've made, and a lot more I've yet to add, but something annoying has happened in the past few days.

<img src="https://socoder.net/AGAWGold_128.png" style="float:right;">AGameAWeek Gold is our occasional glance through the archive, to pluck out some of the great games that I've created over the many years that I've been doing this.
Along the way we'll discover some great gems that I'd forgotten about, or occasionally the odd bit of garbage that I'm frankly happy to have forgot about!
Today, we take a look at a strange little Pong game!

Karl's Tiny Adventure was created way, way, way back in March of this year.
You can (URL "https://AGameAWeek.com/GameList.php?ShowJust=288">Play Karl's Tiny Adventure here).
The game was my first true test of proper "Image Data Loading", and my first proper lesson in Android Fragmentation.
Annoyingly, because different Android devices operate in slightly different ways, the Image Data Loading wasn't occurring in an accurate manner, and as a result, the level data was getting all screwed up.
As well...

<img src="https://socoder.net/AGAWGold_128.png" style="float:left;">It's been a while since I did an AGameAWeek Gold.
There's not been a lot of stand-out stuff popping up on the old time-machine. Sure there's been a whole pile of games, but nothing that's really been noteworthy, so for the most part I've kind of been ignoring this section of the site.
Today, however, a lovely little game popped up, and I spent a good hour playing the thing! Whoops!!

What we're left with, however, is a nice happy little game for up to four players, so that's nice.

Sometimes they're great, Occasionally they're terrible, but usually they're odd.
There are some games that you can pick up, tweak a little thing, and end up with a much different sort of game.
Pacman->Blockman is a great example of this sort of mechanic-tweaking.
Other times, however, there's not really a whole lot you can do to a game.

Last week, one of my quickly cobbled together test tunes for JMTrackr was the old Manic Miner ingame music. If you download JMtrackr, you'll find it in the Retro folder.
I created it quickly, made a little mp3 of it in random mode, and plopped it up on Socoder.
People seemed to fall in love with the idea of me making a Manic Miner clone, and over the course of the past few days, that's escalated somewhat..
People really seem to want me to make a Manic Miner type thing.

<img src="https://socoder.net/AGAWGold_256.png" style="float:right;">Before I'd decided on the "Blockman Gets" mechanic, I tried many a different thing with him.
First, there was the Platform engine, where he had to run around and gather up the tiny blocklets. That worked nicely!
After that I tried a "Pengo" approach, but he didn't seem happy pushing things around, so that never actually got uploaded anywhere.
After that, I decided to go old-skool, and made a bog standard Pacman clone, but with a ...

So, here we go again.
We're up to Year 5, and hopefully we'll get a full year out of it, this year (nnngh).
With Monkey, we get a chance to go back over our previous games, and remake them for a new audience, with iOS, Android and Browser based versions. I expect this will prove to be an exciting year.
Given that we can play at showing off, what games do you think would work best, and adapt well to the new touchy/mouse based gameplay options?
Or, what games could prove to be an obscure tricky challen...

I've always found Flash slightly more complicated than it needs to be.
For a few years I attempted to learn various versions of the official Flash demoes, and SoThink's 900% cheaper clone. They were ok, but they weren't designed for coders. Flash was an artist's tool, with tweening and vector graphics and all that other none-codery stuff.

I have a game!
It's written in <del>Munky</del> Monkey!
But... Am I ready to buy the language yet?
hmmm..
I'm going to give this an extra week.
Next week's game (if I can do it in time) will be done using the GLBasic demo.
I'll spend a week, get the framework half-done, throw in a cheap-ass game, and post the result.
Then I'll decide.
maybe..
Will it be Monkey, or will it be GLBasic?
Find out, Soon!

54 games. Last year I only managed about 30-odd, so I think that's pretty good going.
Sure, it might not have truely actually been A Game "Per" Week, but I did at least keep the ratio up.
If I hadn't taken the time out to build the framework, I probably would've actually achieved the target a little better
The stats show I was pretty much on top of things up until that point, but then things got slower and slower until my buffer zone was all dried up.
Anyhoo, this is a nice big lengthy re...

Cracking game, this week!
What started out as an unknown game, quickly became fantastically playable. A remake of the little WarioWare UFO Spike thing that I made last week, only with more spike things than is probably sane!
In the end, the game's turned out quite a lot like a Geometry Wars clone. I wasn't expecting that, but there it is!
